A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Sun and the Earth so that the Sun is fully or partially covered. This can only happen during a new moon, when the Sun and Moon are in conjunction as seen from the Earth. From Coimbatore we can observe partial eclipse on 15th Jan 2015.
It is dangerous to observe the sun with naked eyes. It is essential to use a safe viewing solar filter to observe the eclipse. A filter that drastically cuts down the strength of the sun's intensity by a factor of 10,000 is recommended. Ordinary dark goggles or sun glasses are not suited for viewing the eclipse.
Partial solar eclipse occurs from 11.10 am to 3.08 pm on 15th January 2010. Arrangements have been made to help the public observe this celestial event at Perks school, opposite to Boat House, near Singanallur, Coimbatore. Solar goggles and astronomical telescopes fitted with solar filters will be available for observing the eclipse.
